Glass

August 29, 2010

So the basic idea for the dwelling is a glass cube. The concept is beautiful, but it presents practical challenges.

Main problem: Glass gets hot in the sun like a greenhouse.

The first line of defense will be trees. I plan to situate these in good tree canopy cover. Beyond that I plan on using full spectrum reflective coating and tinting. Any tinted glass will warm up as it absorbs energy from the sun… and eventually start to re-radiate that energy like an oven. A simple passive cooling system would be to mist water onto the glass surfaces.

It seems like laminated glass is ideal for our purposes. Safe, strong, and less expensive.
